I Don’t Do Resolutions. I Do Reinvention.
For anyone allergic to January self-improvement theater... An anti-resolution love letter to the in-between.
This is the week when the internet starts yelling at you to optimize your life.
New year. New goals. New habits. New you.
And every year, I feel the same quiet resistance rise in my chest.
Because I don’t do resolutions.
Not because I don’t believe in growth… but because I’ve lived long enough to know that rigid plans don’t survive real life.
Resolutions assume stability.
They assume your body will cooperate.
Your grief will stay polite.
Your politics won’t radicalize you.
Your creativity will arrive on schedule.
Your nervous system will magically calm down on January 1st.
That hasn’t been my life.
Reinvention, on the other hand, expects disruption.
It assumes you’ll learn something uncomfortable.
That you’ll shed things that once kept you safe.
That the version of you who makes the plan won’t be the same one who has to live it.
Reinvention leaves room for the mess.
For the pivot.
For the season where “showing up” looks nothing like what you imagined.
I’ve learned this the hard way… through queerness, through disability, through grief, through leaving an entire country, through learning that survival isn’t the same thing as living.
Resolutions used to feel like another test I was destined to fail.
Reinvention feels like a relationship, with myself, that I get to keep renegotiating.
THE NEXT THING I WANT TO TELL YOU
I didn’t set out to write a philosophy. I wrote these over about seven weeks, and somewhere in the middle I realized they were building the same thing, one piece at a time. This is that argument, in the order it arrived. If you want to understand what Messy Reinvention actually believes, start at the top and read down.
I Don’t Do Resolutions. I Do Reinvention: where it starts: not fixing, refusing.
I Don’t Set Goals. I Set Conditions: the practice that replaces the chasing.
Boundaries Aren’t Walls. They’re the Infrastructure That Builds a Life That Works: what makes the conditions hold.
What Boundaries Take With Them: the cost of that, named honestly.
You’re Not Behind. You’re Just No Longer Willing to Bleed for Progress: the timeline you’re allowed to walk off.
Why Reinvention Feels Like Disobedience (and Why That’s the Point): why all of it feels like breaking a rule.
I Didn’t Mean to Build a Life Philosophy: the realization that it had been one the whole time.
YOU FOUND YOUR WAY HERE
Messy Reinvention is for people rebuilding a life that no longer fits, without pretending the demolition was beautiful. New essay most Saturdays. Come get the next one.
What Reinvention Looked Like This Year (In Practice)
Not a checklist.
Not a master plan.
Just leaping into the void and trying.
An Invitation (Not a Resolution)
So if you’re in this strange, soft, feral week between holidays and expectations…
consider this permission to skip the declarations.
You don’t need a word of the year.
You don’t need a flawless plan.
You don’t need to prove momentum.
You’re allowed to move slowly.
To revise.
To contradict yourself.
To reinvent as you go.
The only thing I’m carrying into the new year is curiosity.
That’s more than enough.

I've never been a resolution person. I'm more of a "how do I want to show up" person.
How many of us make resolutions and fail. So cheers to you and all of us who let’s live for today, not for what we might do 😉. Also Waymon your photo in this post is beautifully sexy 🥰.
